A little about Frank and Betsy Sawyer

By Betsy

We met in Chicopee, Massachusetts at the Chicopee State Park in 1973. I grew up in the Willamansett Heights part of Chicopee; Frank grew up in an Air Force family, his dad retired from the military while in Chicopee.

We married in June of 1977; we resided in Chicopee. We did some traveling in the United States before starting our family in 1983 when our son Lafe entered our lives with our daughter Melissa arriving in 1985.

I pursued my dream of teaching a few years later with support from Frank. I began taking night classes piecing my college education together whenever possible at Holyoke Community College. I was happy to find my first teaching assistant position in Chicopee.

In 1991 we moved from Chicopee to Belchertown to raise our family. I subbed in Belchertown School lunch program while I looked for a teaching position in the area, which I achieved soon after. As I taught and learnt through the years from many different co-teachers’ and directors’ techniques, I was able to obtain my approach to teaching young children. I continued my education and experience to reach my goal of Director II qualification from the state of Massachusetts.

In 2000 we decided as a family that it was time to begin Little Friends Child Care Center. Frank continued his regular job and took care of maintenance and upkeep at Little Friends. Lafe also did maintenance, while he finished High School and went on to Springfield Technical Community College and received a degree in Electrical Engineering. The school bus dropped Melissa off at Little Friends as a part-time job while in High School, she continued her teaching profession as she went to Holyoke Community College and achieved her degree in Early Education.

Soon after our children were married had homes and families of their own. Melissa and Mike was expecting our first grandson although we were losing a great teacher we were becoming GRANDPARENTS, then our second grandchild arrived a girl this time.

Lafe and Jenn were expecting, our third grandchild a boy, then our fourth grandchild a girl entered our lives.

We feel our lives are happy and complete as we continue to live in Belchertown and get enjoyment from our grandchildren and all of the children and families who enter our lives through Little Friends Child Care Center.

As always we THANK all the families who have chosen Little Friends as well as all of the families who will choose us in the future.

Thank -You!
